Douglas Arnold Nehring

April 19, 1951 — August 20, 2024

Douglas Arnold Nehring went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the age of 73 on Tuesday August 20, 2024. His faith was unwavering throughout his courageous yearlong battle with cancer. He passed peacefully with his wife and family by his side in the home he and his wife built in Sweetwater, Tx.

Born April 19, 1951, to Raymond “Bud” & Faith Nehring, he grew up in Hinkley, Illinois and graduated from Hinkley Big Rock High School in 1969. He attended Kishwaukee Junior College where he played baseball and majored in agriculture. Doug also tried out for the Cincinnati Reds Farm League baseball team in 1971 before being drafted into the US Army. He served our country proudly and selflessly for 18 months in Korea.

One of Doug’s passions was rotational grazing. He worked with Parson’s and Savory on holistic resource management, and studied many styles of grazing in several different countries and developed the current rotational grazing program onto the McDowell ranch which is still utilized today. Since incorporating rotational grazing on the McDowell Ranch, he’s had several journal, and magazine articles written about his success throughout the years. He had the pleasure of working for many different ranches during his lifetime. His experiences began with the Rocking J and Hollers Ranches in Cody Nebraska, and included the Rocking J Limousine Ranch in Auxvasse, Missouri, the Spade Ranch in Colorado City Tx, the Ox-Bow Ranch in Gail, Tx, the Pink Adobe Ranch in Springer New Mexico, the McDowell Ranch in Garden City, Tx, and finally the McDowell Ranch in Borden County, Tx.

Doug met his wife Donna on an August Saturday night at the VFW in Colorado City Texas. Seven weeks later after she taught him how to dance, that shy bunkhouse cowboy with the handsome dimpled smile, married his fiery red-headed cowgirl on Thursday September 23, 1976. (According to Donna, right after the ceremony, Doug threw his hat in the air and let out a squall he was so happy). They would’ve been married 48 years this September.

Doug lived his life as a God-fearing man of faith, and humility. He served selflessly in the church as an elder, participated on the worship team, and spent time as an ambassador for Marriage Ministries International. He was steadfast in his devotion to his family and his church.

Doug was happiest on the back of a horse. He frequently said, “If people that don’t believe in God could only see what I see horseback, first thing in the morning, looking at a set of cows….” He also loved baseball. His favorite team was the Chicago Cubs, and he watched them play every chance he got.

Doug was Preceded in death by his parents, his brother Chuck Nehring, and his sister Kathy Nehring. He is survived by his wife Donna Nehring of Sweetwater, Tx, his brother Kent Nehring of Kenton Oklahoma, his children, Mike Douglass and wife Glenda of Sutherland Springs, Tx, Dana White and husband Claude of Clyde, Tx, his grandchildren, Kylan Reynolds, Mykea Mackey, Chris Beal, Kaylene White, and Caitlyn Douglass, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.
