Donald Powell

Donald Lewis Powell passed away on September 18, 2025, surrounded by his children.

Don was born on February 16, 1940, in Sweetwater, Texas, to W.R. "Jinks" Powell and Eleanor Philquist Powell. He graduated from Colorado High School in 1958 and went on to attend Texas Christian University, where he majored in Ranch Management and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. In 1961, Don moved to Lubbock and continued his studies at Texas Tech University, where he remained an active member of Kappa Sigma and participated in the rodeo and meat judging teams.

In his younger years, Don carried on the family ranching legacy in Mitchell County alongside his grandfather and father. He later worked at Shannon Hospital in San Angelo for more than 20 years.

Don was best known for his calm and kind demeanor-and for his great golf swing. For as long as he was able, he could be found on the golf course nearly every day. He cherished time with his family and his golfing friends. Don was also a lifelong member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Colorado City.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Don is survived by his brother, George Powell and wife Rachel, of Colorado City, Texas; his four children, Dane Powell of Scurry County, Texas, Reed Powell and wife, Carla, of Snyder, Texas, Page Powell and Jim Akin of Midland, Texas, and Blis Freeman and husband, Chris, of Dallas, Texas; nine grandchildren, Brittany Powell, Kali Powell, Jordan Powell, Riley Price and husband, Tanner, Colton Powell, Kimberly Key and husband, Hayden, Lawson Freeman, Hadley Freeman, and Sutton Freeman; as well as several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Don's children wish to express their deepest gratitude to his caregiver, Dora, and to the staff and nurses of Robert Lee Care Center and Gentiva Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion.

The family will hold a private memorial service in Mitchell County at a later date
