Obituary for Mary June (McGinty) Ashley

Mary June (McGinty) Ashley, 82, passed away in her home on December 25, 2020, surrounded by family and loved ones. Her last Christmas morning on this earth was bright and merry with a house full of family, a floor littered with paper, bows, and toys, and a buffet spread fit for a Queen. The joy of Christmas was not stolen from June, rather, it abounded. And it ended with the peace and dignity that she so often afforded her own patients and loved ones in their last moments.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, December 29, 202 11:00 am at Miller Family Funeral Home with Pastor Denny Dale officiating. .Burial will follow in the Snyder Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller Family Funeral Home.

June was born on January 25, 1938 in Snyder Texas to Shade and Tommie McGinty. She married Kenneth Dale Ashley on July 15, 1953. Together they raised four children: Darrel Lee, Jerry Lynn, David Ray, and Kenita Jean in various counties of West Texas. June graduated from New Mexico Junior College with top marks and obtained licensure as a Registered Nurse in 1974. She led a long and fulfilling career in nursing, retiring her license in 2012. Her experience and expertise spanned across many disciplines, but the bulk of her career was spent in the Operating Room. When recently asked what type of nurse she was, June responded, “Well…I’ve done it all I guess.” And that she has, as well as inspiring many along the way. Kenneth and June retired to their lake house in Kingsland, TX in 1990 where they focused their attention on spending time with each other and entertaining the grandchildren.

Known to most as Mama or Mema, June was a warm and welcoming soul to all. She was kind, congenial, and giving. June also had a spark inside that is unparalleled in today’s world. As a military wife, mom, and nurse with more than a dash of Irish blood, June harbored a fierce tenacity that was admired far and wide. Her passions included reading, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles, crocheting and quilting. She enjoyed entering her crafts in the State Fair and brought home many awards for her afghans. June was a collector of sorts and her home is full of proudly displayed clocks, salt and pepper shakers, trinket boxes, and more. She was an avid follower of current events and never turned down a political debate. But her greatest passion was loving and caring for the pets she rescued. She could not say no to an animal in need.

June is survived by two of her children, one son, David Ashley and wife Debbie of Marble Falls, TX and her only daughter, Kenita Ashley of Kingsland, TX. One granddaughter, two step grandchildren, multiple great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

June is preceded in death by her loving husband, Kenneth, two sons, Darrel “Tinker” Ashley and Jerry Ashley, one granddaughter, Nikki Ashley, her father Shade, mother, Tommie, and her only brother, Buster McGinty.

Special thanks from the Ashley family to Altus Hospice Services for the care and compassion given so freely to June and her family in our greatest time of need.
