Obituary for Levi Lynn Hill

On Tuesday, August 31, 2021, Levi Lynn Hill slipped peacefully from Cogdell Memorial Covid-19 unit in Snyder into the arms of his Savior Jesus Christ surrounded by family and his best friend, Tommy Johnson. He fought a valiant battle with this dread disease. He was born to Elbert L. and Dorothy McInnis Hill on January 24, 1956, his sister Gracie’s 7th birthday, at the old Battenfield/Jones Hospital in Snyder. He was a lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was born on Saturday and went to church on Sunday. He was proud of that faithful legacy modeled by his parents and didn’t miss many Sundays in his 65 years since. At Calvary he served as a longtime deacon, trustee and treasurer. He was never one to seek the spotlight but worked tirelessly behind the scenes for the success of God’s kingdom. He consistently met with the men of the church to pray for the pastor before the Sunday morning service.

At Snyder High School, he won numerous trophies for his performance on the Thinlies Track team. He ran the 220 yd. dash and the 440 yd. and mile relays where he held the Big Country records in each for a time. One of his relay teams even made a trip to the Texas State Track Meet. However, a dropped baton somewhat hampered their success. Upon graduation in 1976, he was awarded a track scholarship to Ranger Junior College, but a hamstring injury cut his college track career short. He had a lifelong passion for sports, always enjoying a good game of golf, a sport where his natural athleticism enabled him to enjoy tournament success, probably fewer times than he would have had you believe. He mentored his daughter and grandson who played golf for SHS. He loved watching his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews play a variety of sport, supporting them to the fullest. When his grandson showed a champion steer, he enjoyed the success as if it were his own. His greatest love was his family. He was fiercely loyal to them. He made special one-on-one time for each of his three Snyder grandsons; therefore, leaving a legacy of many happy memories. His need for speed was realized in his hot rod or hot dog as his middle grandson Kelton used to call his souped-up Mustang. Many happy memories are associated with that car, some perhaps involved leaving behind some rubber. He spent countless hours on the phone visiting and reminiscing with his siblings. Those were times to commiserate, console, encourage and regale each other with tall tales of great achievements. He had a dry wit and firmly held beliefs (some might call it stubbornness) about most everything, especially his religious and political beliefs. These were prominently expounded, debated and discussed in his early morning coffee time with his buddies, I’m sure; however, no one is revealing the exact content of those sessions.

Levi was a hard and conscientious worker. His first job while in high school was as a sacker and stocker at Everybody’s Grocery across from the bowling alley. After college, he entered the oil field where he worked the rest of his life. He worked for Reef Chemical, Champion, Chem Tech, and Fluid Transport. He was extremely proud of the recommendation of one of his high school coaches that Levi fill his sales job when the coach retired from the oil field. That confidence in him spoke volumes about his work ethic and integrity. At the time of his death, he worked for Imperative Chemicals as a well treater, a job he knew quite well.

He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Margie Hopper Sharp Hill, his daughter Shastade Hill Pena and husband John of Snyder, three grandsons, Kaebren Hill, Kelton Hill and Nehemiah Pena all of Snyder, TX; son Chris Lee and wife Christina, granddaughter Aren Lee all of Clyde, TX; son Brandon Lee and wife Julie, granddaughter Alexis Lee and grandson Nakota Lee all of Amarillo; daughter Daniell Sharp Digby and husband David, granddaughter Lillyan Digby and grandson Tyson Digby all of Hermleigh, TX; son Thaddeus Sharp, grandson Westin Sharp and granddaughter Tatum Sharp all of Houston, TX; three sisters, Deanna Dunn of Midland, Doris Tanner of Snyder and Gracie Aye and husband Bob of Willard, MO; two brothers Phillip Larry Hill and wife Linda of Midland and Travis Glenn Hill of Hitchcock, TX; and to quote him as he cocked his head to one side, his “favorite first wife” Brenda Lee Hill; numerous nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends who will greatly miss him.

One of his friends describes his friendship with Levi: He is a strong man of God and a rock when I suffered a family loss. For the last four years he met with me at 6 A.M. every single morning and allowed me to cry, scream or just sit in silence. We prayed together, and Levi wasn’t scared off by my pain. “…there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24).“ Levi was that man. This proves Levi’s true friendship and loyalty. He has, additionally, stepped into the role of father to many who were not his biological children. He had an abundance of love to share.

He was welcomed to heaven by his parents Elbert and Dorothy (McInnis) Hill, brother David Wayne Hill and brother-in-love Jerry Dunn.

He was the youngest and biggest of the Hill siblings, our gentle giant. His departure leaves a huge hole in our family, but he leaves behind a tremendous legacy of love and devotion to his friends, his family, his church and his God. We are eternally thankful for the secure hope that we have that we will see him again soon. How precious it is to realize that the eternity we will share together dwarfs the brevity of our life here on earth.

An opportunity to visit with the family will be held on Thursday, September 2, 2021 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm at Miller Family Funeral Home in Snyder, TX. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 1:00 pm at Calvary Baptist Church in Snyder with Levi’s longtime pastor, Rev. Larry McAden and his beloved son-in-love John Pena of Deep Creek Church officiating
