Obituary for Ford Morris Spikes

Ford Morris Spikes was born June 7, 1931 in Colorado City, Texas to Sam Houston and Opal Miller Spikes. Ford graduated from Snyder High School in 1948. He attended college at Sul Ross and joined the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. After receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to Sul Ross and later graduated on the Dean’s List from Texas Tech with a degree in Agriculture Education.

Ford married Doris Sterling on August 27th, 1954. Since their first date, dancing to Hoyle Nix in 1953, they took great pleasure in dancing and have since danced at least a “million more miles” together. They also enjoyed playing bridge and church activities together. Following his entrepreneurial spirit Ford started Spikes Fertilizer in 1962 and operated it and a very successful Amway business as well as farming and raising cattle for the next 23 years. After closing the fertilizer business he obtained his real estate broker license and owned and operated Jack and Jack Real Estate for over 20 years.

Ford is survived by his wife Doris; daughter Shann Pierce and husband of Dannie of Snyder. Sons Van Spikes and wife Renee of Aspermont and Bob Spikes and wife Tricia of Rotan. Also surviving are five grandchildren Sarah Pierce of Snyder, Calli Pierce of Ira and Brodie Pierce and wife Devin of Columbus Ohio. Shelby Kuehn and husband Wesley of Corinth, Texas and Shanna Marburger and husband Jeffery of Brady. Other survivors are five great grandchildren Tana Pierce, Rylan and Ryder Kuehn, Charolette and Clancy Marburger. One brother Jack Spikes of Dallas.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Patsy Shannon, brother Sam Spikes and grandson Tom Spikes.

The word Hero is defined as “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities”. These descriptors in addition to integrity, honesty, undying patriotism, and love for others are only a few reasons Ford was the hero to his family.
